A woman in Texas is accused of trying to drown a 3-year-old at a pool in a Dallas suburb after making racist comments toward the child’s mother. The police are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

Elizabeth Wolf, 42, has been charged with attempted murder and hurting a child. The child’s mother said Wolf made racist remarks to her, including saying she wasn’t American.

The mother, who wears a hijab, said her family are Palestinians who became American citizens. The police have asked prosecutors to consider it a hate crime.

Police said Wolf, who was very drunk, tried to drown the child and argued with the mother. Witnesses saw the incident at the pool on May 19.

Wolf asked the mother where she was from and if the kids were hers. When the mother answered, Wolf tried to grab her 6-year-old son, causing a scratch. Then, she grabbed the 3-year-old girl and forced her underwater. The mother rescued her daughter.

Both kids were checked by medics and were okay.

Wolf has been released on bond. Community leaders have condemned the attack and how the family was treated. State Rep. Salman Bhojani said it has caused pain for immigrants and Muslims.
