After a Juneteenth celebration at Lake Merritt in Oakland, several people were shot on Wednesday night, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Police were already in the area when the shooting happened. Thankfully, there were no reported deaths, said the OPD.

The Juneteenth events were peaceful until around 8:15 p.m., when a sideshow started at Bellevue Avenue and Grand Avenue. The sideshow included many cars and motorbikes. Shortly after, a fight broke out nearby, followed by multiple gunshots, according to the OPD.

Officers from the OPD quickly responded to the situation, trying to keep people safe. However, some officers were pushed and hit in the face. One person was arrested for attacking an officer.

The OPD is unsure of the exact number of people who were shot. Around 5,000 people had gathered at the lake for Juneteenth, and the OPD had 28 officers and four sergeants on duty.
