According to a recent report, several cities in Oregon are among the most dangerous in the United States. The analysis, which drew from FBI crime data, identified Ontario, Portland, Roseburg, and Coos Bay as some of the most crime-ridden areas in the state.

Ontario: The Most Dangerous City in Oregon

The most dangerous city in Oregon is Ontario, with a crime rate 175% higher than the national average. Located in Malheur County on the Idaho border, Ontario has a population of 11,645 and is one of the cheapest places to live in Oregon.

The city experiences high rates of property crime, including theft, burglaries, and larceny. Violent crime is also more than double the national average, with 72 incidents recorded in 2023.

Portland: A Troubled Metropolis

Portland is one of the most dangerous cities in Oregon. As the state’s largest city, it attracts many tourists and is an economic center. However, it faces growing issues with crime and homelessness. With 652,503 residents, Portland’s crime rate is 171% higher than the national average.

The city has struggled with homelessness for years, which adds to the high crime rate. Residents often report break-ins of cars and homes. Additionally, Portland has a serious problem with drug addiction and drug-related crimes.

Roseburg: A Logging Town Plagued by Crime

Roseburg is a major logging city with a population of 23,683. It’s considered one of the worst places to live in Oregon because of its high crime rate, which is 134% above the national average.

Property crimes, especially theft and burglary, are the most common. The city also faces issues with poverty and drug addiction, which contribute significantly to these crimes.

Coos Bay: A Coastal City with Concerning Crime Rates

Coos Bay is one of the most dangerous cities in Oregon. Located near the Pacific Ocean, it has a population of 32,308. The crime rate in Coos Bay is 111% higher than the national average.

In 2022, there were over 700 property thefts and 82 violent crimes. Burglary, theft, and vehicle theft are the most common crimes. Despite the crime, Coos Bay is a popular seaside tourist spot, known for its extensive botanical gardens.

The findings from this recent report highlight the troubling crime issues facing several cities in Oregon. While these rankings do not define the entirety of a community, they underscore the need for comprehensive solutions to address the underlying social and economic factors contributing to these high crime rates.

Policymakers, law enforcement, and community leaders must work together to implement effective strategies that improve public safety and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in these affected areas.
