Wyandotte Police say their officers likely prevented a disaster when they found and seized a homemade bomb during a routine traffic stop.

Around 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, two officers stopped a driver for a minor issue. While talking to the driver and his passenger, the officers noticed something unusual.

After looking more closely, the officers found that the men were carrying a homemade bomb with shrapnel inside, as well as drugs.

The men were arrested for having an explosive device, dangerous drugs, and cocaine.

Wyandotte Police said, “This kind of bomb is meant to kill or hurt people. The shrapnel makes it even more dangerous. Thanks to the excellent work of Officers Groat, Rasmussen, and Saltsman, this bomb won’t hurt anyone.”

An X-ray showed the shrapnel inside the bomb, according to the police. They also thanked the Dearborn Police Bomb Squad for their quick and professional help.

The names of the men in custody haven’t been released yet as they await their court appearance. Police haven’t said what the suspects planned to do with the bomb, but the investigation is still ongoing.
