A man from Massachusetts pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court for using fake checks at several post offices in Central New York to purchase $30,000 worth of stamps, according to prosecutors.
William Soto, 32, from Springfield, was charged with 12 counts of stealing government property by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.
Prosecutors stated that over two days, Soto confessed to buying $30,000 in postage stamps from the U.S. Postal Service. During one of these incidents, he bought $9,438 worth of stamps from a post office in Oswego County.
Soto could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. His sentencing is set for October 29.
