Charges have been filed for a shooting that happened last summer in Rogers Park. During the incident, a man died and a woman got hurt as they were leaving a hookah lounge.
Deric Balark, who was 30 years old, and a 20-year-old woman were leaving the lounge with a group of people around 1:30 in the morning on July 30. As they were walking along West Devon Street, someone started shooting at them.
Now, prosecutors say that a 30-year-old man named Demarious Flakes was the shooter. Flakes followed Balark and the woman and shot at them while they were walking. Balark tried to run away, but Flakes kept shooting at him until he fell down in the street. Flakes then ran away.
After the shooting, the police said Balark was shot ten times. Court documents reveal that the woman was shot in her leg and ear.
Investigators found that the car the shooter used to escape belonged to a relative of Flakes’ girlfriend. They also found Flakes’ DNA on evidence and identified him in video footage related to the crime.
Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman approved the state’s request to keep Flakes in detention. She mentioned in her decision that Flakes was already on probation and had an active federal arrest warrant at the time of the shooting.
