Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, was reported missing from his San Marino home on Sunday evening, prompting an immediate search effort. A command post was set up near his residence, and search teams, including K-9 units and helicopters, were deployed with assistance from multiple agencies. The community rallied to locate him swiftly.
Fortunately, around 1:15 a.m. on Monday, Baca was located safe and unharmed in El Monte. He had been inside a restaurant whose owners, recognizing him from the identification bracelet he wore, alerted authorities concerned for his well-being. San Marino Police Chief John Incontro briefed the media, confirming Baca’s safe recovery and his reunion with family at home.
Incontro emphasized the importance of the identification bracelet, which facilitated Baca’s swift identification and ensured his safe return. He also mentioned that the San Marino Fire Department assessed Baca and found him to be in good health, with any ongoing medical needs to be addressed by his family.
The incident highlighted the community’s support and the coordinated efforts of law enforcement and local agencies in ensuring Baca’s safety. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those living with Alzheimer’s and the critical role of identification and community awareness in such situations.
