Family members of a young father killed in the Bronx are demanding justice, saying he was stabbed to death after witnessing a road rage incident. Ronald Gomez-Mesa, 29, was remembered by friends and family in Morris Heights where he was well-known and loved.

According to his sister speaking to CBS New York, Gomez-Mesa was simply hanging out on Tuesday afternoon when he got caught up in the middle of the incident. Surveillance video captured the chaos starting around 4:30 p.m. A woman involved in a car crash allegedly called her boyfriend, who arrived angry. A man on a scooter threw a bottle at the boyfriend, sparking a confrontation.

Police say the boyfriend then attacked a different man on a scooter, whom family identified as Gomez-Mesa, as he tried to defend the other person. The situation escalated, leading to Gomez-Mesa being stabbed in the chest in front of Rainbow Day Care. He later died at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Witnesses described the attacker fleeing towards West Burnside Avenue wearing all black and red Crocs. Gomez-Mesa’s family, who moved to New York from the Dominican Republic for a better life, now mourn the loss of a beloved son and father, leaving behind a young daughter.

“He was a good person,” said a witness, noting Gomez-Mesa was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. His sister pleaded for justice, emphasizing that he didn’t deserve to die senselessly.
