Nicholas Roske, a 29-year-old California man accused of attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, has received a sentencing date.

Roske pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to assassinate a Supreme Court Associate Justice last week. U.S. District Judge Deborah L. Boardman set the sentencing for October 3 at 10 a.m. EDT.

Roske could face a sentence ranging from 30 years to life in a maximum-security prison.

Additionally, prosecutors have stated that due to the nature of his crime, which involved or was intended to promote federal terrorism, he could face enhanced penalties related to terrorism.

According to the guilty plea, in 2022, Roske formulated a plan to kill one or more Supreme Court justices.

He used the internet to search for their home addresses, research weapons, methods to break into homes undetected, ways to kill quietly (including strangulation and stabbing, particularly in the neck), and how to travel with weapons.

Roske made it to Kavanaugh’s neighborhood in Pennsylvania, carrying burglary tools and a firearm, but he ultimately decided against carrying out the attack.

He was spotted by two U.S. Deputy Marshals stationed near Kavanaugh’s residence, and he walked away from the scene.

Roske later called 911, stating he had suicidal and homicidal thoughts, that he possessed a firearm in his suitcase, and that he had come from California with the intent to kill Justice Kavanaugh.
