Bob Gallo, a leader at his family’s winery and a generous supporter of causes in Modesto, has passed away at the age of 89. He was a key figure at E.&J. Gallo Winery, founded by his father Julio and uncle Ernest in 1933. Under his leadership, the winery grew to become the world’s largest, expanding into spirits as well.

Bob and his wife Marie were instrumental in establishing the Gallo Center for the Arts in downtown Modesto. They were also dedicated to education, environmental conservation, supporting the Catholic Church, and various other charitable efforts.

Ernest J. Gallo, the current CEO and Bob’s nephew, praised him for his environmental stewardship and leadership, which he said has positioned their business and industry well for the future.

Bob and Marie were married for 63 years until her passing in 2021. They had eight children, though tragically one passed away at a young age. The Gallo family, now in its third generation, continues to play important roles in running the family-owned winery.

E.&J. Gallo Winery employs approximately 7,000 people and sources grapes from California, Washington, New York, and other regions worldwide. In recent years, they’ve expanded into spirits and even entered the beer sector with investments like Montucky Cold Snack.

Throughout his career, Bob held titles such as co-president and co-chairman, leaving a lasting legacy both within his family’s business and in the community of Modesto.
