A 15-year-old boy involved in a shooting at a Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally has been sentenced to a youth facility.

In court, the boy, called R.G., said he wasn’t a bad person before he got mixed up with a group that was involved in the shooting on February 14.

The shooting left a radio show host dead, 25 people injured, and 69 others hurt while trying to escape, according to Kansas City police detective Grant Spiking.

Prosecutors say the shooting started when two groups fought. Lyndell Mays, one of the three men charged with murder, is accused of starting the shooting. R.G. then fired at Mays and accidentally hit another person in his own group, Dominic Miller, who is also facing murder charges.

Judge Jennifer Phillips told R.G. that making bad choices doesn’t make him a bad person. The time in the youth facility will usually be between 9 and 12 months.

Earlier this month, R.G. admitted to firing a gun at someone, which led to the charge of unlawful use of a weapon. The other charge, armed criminal action, was dropped, and his case will stay in juvenile court.

R.G.’s lawyer asked for him to be released under strict supervision and house arrest, with a ban on social media. R.G.’s mother said the house isn’t the same without him.

However, the juvenile office’s lawyer said time in the youth facility would help keep him away from negative influences.

Two other teens are also charged in the shooting. One will not be tried as an adult, and the other is facing gun-related charges but not adult prosecution.
