Golfers are still visiting Northland courses,
but most facilities are feeling a pinch in the pocketbook

Golf and money.

There is no arguing the two go hand in hand.

Whether it’s figuring out if you have enough cash to play that dream destination course instead of another round at the local muni, deciding to wager with your playing partner about the outcome on the 18th hole or calculating the right amount to tip the cart girl, golf and money are always constant bedfellows.

Perhaps that has never been more evident than now, as the well-documented problems with the U.S. economy remain on the front-burner with each passing day.

Let me tell you right now. It couldn’t have been any prettier.

From the top of the key, I backed my way down to the right block. Jab step into the lane. Drop step to the baseline. Soft baby hook shot off the glass and in. Money.

Off to the side of the court, I heard the comments under the breaths from the peanut gallery, stuff to the tune of: "Man, that was pretty." Uh, guys … it also left me on the short end of a 9-1 score.

It’s Business 101.

Offer the customer a quality product at an affordable price, and your chances of keeping the doors open are pretty good.

This seems to be the prevailing mentality for public golf courses in the Northland in the wake of the dour U.S. economy. Yes, memberships may be down. Customers may not be spending as much money in the pro shop or at the snack bar.

But when it comes to plunking down some hard-earned green to step on the greens, Northland golf directors say their competitive prices are keeping their courses busy this summer.

The economy is not only affecting the public golf courses in the Northland. Private and semi-private clubs like Liberty Hills Country Club and Tiffany Greens Golf Club have also battled the downturn.

Marimack, Maple Creek offer shorter option
for those looking to save time and money

Mack Porter knows anyone with a vision of being the next Tom Watson is not going to show up at the Marimack Golf Complex.

That’s just not the role the Kearney facility, with its two distinct nine-hole "executive" layouts, fills in the Northland golf landscape.
