With her extensive athletic background, Smithville senior Dessie Lake thought she’d give the school’s Winter Guard a try — confident she’d be able to handle any physical challenges thrown her way.

It didn’t take her long to discover how demanding her newfound activity actually was.

Tom Hanks, a local amateur photographer, will be contributing nature photos for The Smithville Herald’s Outdoors section on a regular basis.

Hanks has been taking nature photos as a hobby for about 20 years in the Smithville area and he said, for the most part, it’s just a good way to bond with his father and spend some time outside, with his dad spotting with binoculars and Hanks taking the pictures.

Howard Hamilton first started cooking pancakes in 1959 while serving in the U.S. Navy.

“I learned that if I wanted to be fed and eat well, I needed to work in the mess hall,” the Smithville man said.
