When times get tough, the tough go to the library.

That was the overall message that came through on the June 11 segment of the Today Show.

The American Library Association provided some stats worth mentioning. For instance, 73 percent of public libraries reported they offered the only free Internet access in their communities. That number rose to 83 percent in rural areas.

Free Internet and WiFi access offered at libraries apparently help during an economic downturn. Library personnel reported an increase in patrons filing for unemployment, searching for jobs and filling out online applications. Shari Ellison, Smithville's branch manager, said the library personnel can help by getting people started with unfamiliar Web sites and troubleshooting if problems arise.

Patrons are also saving money on entertainment by checking out CDs, videos and books. Ellison said Smithville's library has seen a 10.4 percent increase in checked out material this year compared to last.

Cardholders can access over 200 databases from the comfort of home, too.
