Despite the economic downturn, several small businesses have opened in Smithville or plan to open in the near future.

Here’s a look at the changes.

Perfect Touch Salon

Perfect Touch Salon, offering family hair care, opened at its new location in Major Mall in March.

“(This is) a better facility, bigger place and better location,” owner Patty Montgomery said.

Montgomery had another shop in January 2005 called Perfect Touch Salon and Spa. She dropped the last part of the name when she relocated to the Major Mall from her previous Smithville location on U.S. Highway 169, near Park Drive.

Hairstyling is not the only service that men and women can receive at Perfect Touch Salon. Montgomery said that manicures, facial waxing, ear candling and a tanning bed are also available in addition to hair care.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

AZN Alterations

AZN Alterations, on the south end of Woods Corner, opened May 1.

The shop is co-owned by Kien and Thao Nguyen. The husband and wife said they have experience in custom-made clothing, which they will also offer in addition to alterations.

Kien said he’s spent several summers coming to Smithville Lake. That’s how he decided that Smithville would be an ideal location for their business.

“I really like Smithville,” he said. “I like fishing, and that’s how I learned about the town.”

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

169 Nails

Another shop, 169 Nails, opened at Woods Corner last month.

Located at 1411 Earthworks Drive, the full nail salon offers manicures, pedicures and nail artwork, such as acrylic nails, hand designs, gel nails and silk wraps.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The nail salon takes appointments or walk-ins.

Motorcycle Closeouts

Rusty and Charlotte Beck, co-owners of Motorcycle Closeouts, plan to move their business to Smithville by the end of June.

Their new store, which will be in Woods Corner, will carry the same discounted merchandise as their current shop at 8112 N. Oak Trafficway in Kansas City North, Rusty said.

“About 90 percent of our merchandise is apparel,” he said.

Their new location will be about 50 percent larger than their current store, Rusty said. The clothing caters to dirt and street bike riders.

“We do both sides of the street,” Rusty said.

According to its Web site, Motorcycle Closeouts has “a kid-friendly environment,” and enthusiasts can find information about “nice country routes to ride north of town and a few good places to stop and eat.”
